Running with children – running for joy
Running is one of the easiest and most natural forms of exercise for children. Here are some tips on how to make running training a playful activity filled with energy and joy.
Why is running suitable for children?
Children run naturally – on playgrounds, at school and in everyday life. Running strengthens fitness, coordination and self-confidence. But most importantly: it should feel fun and not like a “must”.
Here's how you get started:
-
Keep it short and simple – start with 5–10 minutes.
-
Mix running and playing – take turns being the leader, running a slalom or running “follow John” on the running track.
-
Listen to the children – let their energy and stamina set the pace.
Playful running exercises to try:
-
Pair racing – running two by two, short distances.
-
Relay race – divide into teams and take turns running short distances.
-
Chase the sun – decide on a point on the course and pretend to “chase the sun” there together.
-
Fartlek – run quickly to one cone, then slowly to the next.
Equipment and environment
You don't need much to start running – a pair of comfortable shoes and soft clothes are enough. Running tracks, parks or forest paths provide variety and make the experience more enjoyable.
Children's first run should always be playful. When the focus is on joy, community and small steps, running becomes an adventure they will want to return to – again and again.
Ready, Set, Move!
